Long time

Posted in Disney at 5:09 pm by pxyshan

No see.  I do apologize for being away for so long.  You get a new job and take two trips to Walt Disney World in three months, and suddenly I haven’t been here in way too long!  As my memory of my Disney trips slowly fade, I’ll give you a few highlights that stick with me as I enter the long winter of the frozen tundra.

During my September trip with my husband, we used Disney’s Magical Express to get to our hotel.  I remember it taking a lot of time, but generally running smoothly.  I don’t think I’ll use it again unless I have lots of luggage and time on my hands.  I feel the money for a rental car is very much worth the time and effort it takes.  Plus with a rental car you have the option of driving your self to the parks, which is very valuable to me.  The Disney transport buses are very convenient, but they have very long lines at the end of the night, and take up a lot of time with several stops on each trip.  For me, if I can’t afford to rent a car during my Disney trip, I’ll save the trip for another year.

The rest of that trip was surprisingly relaxing.  Since we had prepared ourselves by knowing we had limited time while we were there, we were able to get in highlights of our favorite parts of the parks.  We spent lots of time in the Magic Kingdom riding our favorite rides, stopping for some streetmosphere, and even meeting some characters.  I must say that I’ve never ridden the Tomorrowland Transit Authority so many times on one trip, but it was fun.  We also got to see Wishes twice!  We made the rounds at Epcot, getting there right as they opened (or right after, I don’t remember) which gave us more time then we knew what to do with.  The end of that day was German beers and watching IllumiNationsfrom Italy, then more rides for extra magic hours.  I’d say we got our moneys worth that day.  We opened Studios and Animal Kingdom, which got us on the rides several times more than usual, and due to my shortcuts and our fast walking, got us first in line for the day at Expedition Everest (we rode in the very front, then ran through the line and got put in the very back, then in the very middle.).  We thought about going on the newest ride, Toy Story Mania!, but once we remembered it was open, and get to the section of Studios it was in, the line was 50 minutes long with fast passes five hours from then, so we passed.

All in all, it was one of the most fun times I’ve had at Walt Disney World.  We even had time to go back to our hotel everyday for a few hours and swim or take naps.  I was very sad when I had to go home, especially because I was leaving my husband there while he worked at his conference.  Lucky for me, my sister called me up and made me an offer I couldn’t refuse and a little more that a month later, she and I headed to Walt Disney World in November.

castle1We stayed at Port Orleans, Riverside on this trip, which was the first time I’ve stayed there.  It’s a beautiful resort and I encourage every one to stay there.  It’s close to Magic Kingdom (especially on back roads, which can be clutch during the mad rush out of the parks) and Studios, and it has a boat that takes you to Downtown Disney.  While I thought my September trip with my husband was short, this one was even shorter.  I got in on Friday night and left Monday night.  That left my sister and I Saturday and Sunday for soaking in all the Disney we could, and we were very successful.  Saturday was spent at Epcot.  We got there right after they opened, so had lots of time to get all the Future World rides in before we headed back to the hotel for naps.  That evening we had our super early dinner (4:30!) at Le Cellier.  My sister had gotten our Disney Dining Plan for free (she’s so good at finding the deals!) so our dinner was the price of our drinks and tip!  Let me tell you, that was well worth it since you get so much food on the dining plan.  Sit down meals include a non-alcoholic drink, entree, and dessert and quick service meals include the same, plus you get a snack a day!  So much food!  Anyway, we had a dedelicious meal (my steak was de-licious) then met up with an old friend of my sisters to drink around the world.  Granted, we didn’t get every country, but we had a lot of fun in the process (”You should drunk dial your kids!”)  IllumiNations was a very moving event, we laughed, we cried, then it was the end of the night.  Sunday was our character breakfast at Cape May Cafe at the Yacht Club Resort, which was a ton of fun!  Donald really liked us and gave us a huge autograph on our tablecloth (”Donald Duck is #1 so awesome cool amazing perfect better than Mickey Mouse always and forever”) and Goofy and Minnie were not too bad.  Plus, the food was really good, and did I mention free?

That night was Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at Magic Kingdom.  We got into the park early and had a nice dinner before we started on the rides and character greeting.  I have to tell you, Disney never looks better than when it’s decked out for Christmas.  The lights hanging over Main Street U.S.A., the different Christmas music piped in through the park, and it even “snows” during the party.  One of the most magical parts of our night was seeing Cinderella’s castle light up.  I’m not ashamed to say I cried a little bit at the sight.  It’s really not something that is fully captured in pictures, but my sister and I took lots of pictures anyway.  From there the night was filled with fun.  We saw Scooge McDuck, Aurora, Prince Philip, Prince Charming, Cinderella, Donald Duck, and the Mouse himself.  Plus we danced with Chip, Dale, Pluto, and Goofy.  We saw a few nice bands playing in various sections and we had very good spots for the parade to watch and wave with our cookies and hot chocolate.  I have to add that Megan and I got singled out by over 75% of the characters and performers during the parade, and that was with being surrounded by little kids.  I don’t know what it was about us, but even the mom next to us asked why everyone waved at us.  It was a very cool experience, especially for me as the Christmas parade is very dear to me.  Our night finished with watching Holiday Wishes, meeting Faun, Silvermist, and Tinker Bell (and I tried not to cry when I met her), and taking lots of pictures of the castle and main street.

It was such a great trip and I can’t thank my sister enough for taking me with her.  I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to do it again, but it was really nice to be with her at Walt Disney World.

Here is where I’ll leave you all for today.  I hope to be back sooner than before to give you all some feed back on the Twilight movie and other news.

See Ya Real Soon!

Whoops!

Posted in Disney at 6:32 pm by pxyshan

Alright, so my inability to follow through with many non-essential things in life has taken over this blog.  I’m sorry.  There is really nothing more I can say.

Since I am leaving for Walt Disney World in less than two days, I’m not going to get around to posting a review for Disney’s Animal Kingdom and my favorite places outside of the parks like I had planned.  I know, I’m dissapointed too.  I guess I’ll have to find a way to pace myself with the new job and class.

For now I can offer you a really shortened version of what I had planned to discuss.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is a good park, but it’s still having growing pains.  I’m most looking forward to Expedition Everest and Dinosaur (or as I still like to call it, Countdown to Extinction), but not in that order.  I’m sad Matt and I won’t be going to a Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, but it costs way too much.  Same with the very last days of Pleasure Island.  I would love to see Adventurer’s Club one last time, but entry to PI is too much for this trip.  I’ll always have my memories I guess.  I miss the luxery of time for visiting my other favorite places on property such as the Boardwalk, Beaches and Cream Ice Cream Parlor, and walking around all the various resorts.  Those experiences are hard to do if you don’t live in the Orlando area or you’re not taking a three week vacation.  But really, any trip to Disney will be a good trip, no matter the length, if you have the rigt attitude.

Which I plan to do.  So farewell my readers.  I’m off to my home away from home with a bounce in my step and a song in my heart.  I will do my very best to give you all a trip report when I return, but I make no promises as to how soon that may be.

That’s all, so See Ya Real Soon!

Countdown to Disney – 3 weeks

Posted in Disney at 5:11 pm by pxyshan

I know, I know!  I took forever!  Really I’ve had this post done for a few days now, but I kept forgetting to email it to my self.  So here it is.  I’m going to aplogise now for any name errors or wrong information.  I was without internet while writing it, so not able to check the facts like I normally can, and making that effort would take more time and delay the post even more SO, here it is.  I’ll do better next time.  Did you miss me?  I’m mostly recovered except for a pesky cough that doesn’t want to go away.  But I won’t let that stop me this week for our

Countdown to Disney – 3 weeks!

As we slowly move closer to the trip, I’ve taken this week to go over Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  Up until January 7 of this year, the park was named Disney-MGM Studios.  I’m not sure why they decided to change the name; however I’m not surprised in the least that it has been changed.  If my memory serves me correctly, Disney and MGM haven’t really ever gotten along that well and I feel that, at least for Disney, dropping MGM from the name is a good move.

The change does make me wonder what, if anything, will happen with The Great Movie Ride.  Now, I think I’m the only person in the world who doesn’t like this ride.  Perhaps I just have bad luck, but every time I went on the half-live-action-half-slow-moving-car ride, I had the absolute worst host giving the spiel and rescuing us from the bad guys.  It was painful to sit through.  I went back at least a dozen times to try and find someone good at the tiny acting that was required for the job, but to no avail.  I heard more excitement from the hosts from The Land (an Epcot ride, for those of you not familiar) talking about growing squash then I did from these people.  Ridiculous.  I have yet to meet anyone else who has the same distaste for the ride as I do.  Even my husband loves it.  Anyway, The Great Movie Ride has scenes and film that are allowed contractually from MGM.  I wonder if these contracts are also affected by the name change.  I guess at this point only time or a cast member in the know will tell.

Besides the name change Studios has seen a lot of changes over the years.  I have vague memories of visiting the park in its first years with my family when I was little and the most I can gather from them is the general thought of, “there’s nothing to do here.”  Don’t take this as a knock on Disney.  Most theme parks have a few growing pains when they first start.  Thankfully Studios has gotten a few more things to do and a bit more of its own identity over the years.

So what am I looking forward to from Hollywood Studios?  Lots of things of course!  Studios is the theme park that has the most exciting thrill rides out of the four.  Don’t get me wrong, Expedition Everest is way cool, (I’ll get to Animal Kingdom next week) but you can’t ignore the great themeing or the close proximity of Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and The Rockin’ Rollercoaster with Aerosmith.  These two rides are the big draw for Studios and for good reason.  Rockin’ Rollercoaster is pretty much the only pure coaster in Walt Disney World.  It’s completely indoors, it goes upside down and you get to listen to Aerosmith while you do it.  This is defiantly a ride for my age group, sticking with an unspoken theme of Studios, but I’ll say more on that later.

Located next to Rockin’ Rollercoaster is the Twilight of Terror and is my favorite ride in Walt Disney World behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.  Putting aside the terrific themeing, how can you not love a ride that drops you from a great height several times in a row?  Even my mother, who was terrified to try it, loves this ride!  Along with being a thrilling experience, the memories attached to Tower only endear it to me more.  I remember convincing my Mom to ride it, then going on it again right after because she loved it so much.  I remember riding with my sister when I was visiting her for spring break and leaving our Doug Live lunch boxes in various places to see if cast members noticed them.  I remember being bored with my roommates from the College Program and seeing how many times we could ride in a three hour span with out any help from fellow cast members (11).  I remember riding it with my boyfriend, then experiencing it again when he became my fiancé, and now I can’t wait for this time with him as my husband.  It’s a great ride and I think it will be the first thing we do when my husband and I get to the park.

But I’m looking forward to more than those two rides.  Studios also plays host to one of my favorite restaurants at Walt Disney World, Primetime Café.  My sister was the first person who found this place and I really don’t know how we didn’t know about it before then.  Primetime is a homey homage to 1950’s kitchens and cooking.  You won’t find a low carb/low calorie item on the menu and thank God for that.  This is a place where your servers are family and you need to keep your elbows off the table and finish your vegetables (which come with every meal) or they’ll tell mom and you may not get dessert.  And trust me, you want dessert here.  Dad’s s’mores are not to be missed.  (Neither are the cocktails from his liquor cabinet, but that’s a different story.)  This place is always packed, but the wait is so worth it.  This is one of those rare times I would get priority seating and show up early for it.  Alright I’m getting too excited about it, so moving on…

Studios is my second favorite park because I feel it spans a very wide audience.

It’s perfect for kids:

Character sightings and greetings are everywhere!  Mickey Avenue hosts lots of characters you may not find in the other parks, especially the Playhouse Disney cast, plus it has the Mouse himself and his friends.  Pixar Place has your computer generated friends, and you may even see the Power Rangers hanging around the park.

There’s the Beauty and the Beast stage show that’s in the shade and fun to watch, the parades that make you want to dance and the High School Musical something or another that they’ll want to see.  Then you have Muppet Vision 3-D, Toy Story Mania, The Playhouse Disney show, and the Honey I Shrunk The Kids playground (which many people don’t know exists).  Don’t forget Fantasmic! which may be going down to fewer shows per week, but is still worth the 2 hour wait in the stands.

So yay for the kids!  They are sure to have a great time.  But studios has much more to it than that,

It’s perfect for grownups:

There are the thrill rides of Rockin’ Rollercoaster and Tower.  The Citizens of Hollywood and hilarious if you’re lucky enough to see one of them and catch an act.  Star Tours is lots of fun, even if you’re not a big fan of the Star Wars movies.  Lights, Motors, Action! is a lot of fun to watch for the whole family (too bad it will be closed for refurbishment while we’re down there).  The restaurants are campy in a good way and they all have a great selection of alcohol.  There are shops all down Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard that provide just as good a selection as Main Street, USA in Magic Kingdom.

And again, there is that intangible something that fills you with joy and makes you forget about your troubles, even if just for an hour or two.

So that brings us again to the end of my ramblings for this week.  I’ll be back in a few days to bring you Countdown to Disney – 2 weeks.

See ya real soon!

Hello friends,

Sorry for the missing post!  I was supposed to post on Countdown to Disney – 4 weeks, but with family in town, a wedding, and the Cold of Death, I have fallen behind.  I will post on Thursday with 3 weeks until Disney.  Sorry again to anyone who was actually looking forward to yet another post about Disney.  I’ll try and make it up to you some how.

~Pxy Shan

P.S. Big thank you to Susan for pointing out that my rage against the wand on Spaceship Earth was completely uncalled for, in that it has already been taken down.  That’s what I get for not doing my research.

Countdown to Disney – 5 weeks

Posted in Disney at 2:55 pm by pxyshan

Yes, one week closer to Disney World.  I can almost smell the artificial scents being sprayed into the air.  Alright my friends, onto Countdown to Disney: week five – Epcot!

This park was almost known as the Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow, but as no one could ever remember that (and why would those that did want say the whole thing every time?), it was referred to as EPCOT Center.  In 1994 it was renamed Epcot ’94, and then in 1995 it was Epcot ’95.  Thankfully in 1996 they changed it again to just Epcot and left it at that.  Good thing too.  Can you imagine how much money it would cost to change merchandise EVERY year?  I shudder at the thought.

Of course any good cast member would know the full original name of Epcot, plus a few other acronyms that aren’t too nice for Disney’s reputation.  Since these are so well know by now, I don’t feel bad posting some of the nicer ones here:

Every Person Comes Out Tired

Every Paycheck Comes On Thursday

As I said, there are more, but I like Disney and those are still true acronyms.  Plus I’m pretty sure I signed something when I worked there saying that I couldn’t say anything bad about Disney ever again or else they would kill my first born child in punishment for my sins.  Maybe I’m confusing that with the tenth plague.  Either way…

So, everyone knows Epcot by the “big golf ball” otherwise known as Spaceship Earth or the geosphere.  Every time I think of it an image from a 1980’s commercial with Mickey Mouse waving from its top pops into my mind.  That was of course back when it was just the geosphere and didn’t have all that other crap sitting on the top and side of it.  Grah.  It was cool when they put the wand with the “2000” on for the millennium celebration, but after that they should have taken it off, not changed it to “Epcot”.  I think it looks tacky and the worst part about it?  They have to put a red blinking light on top of it now for airplanes.

Why is a red blinking light such a big deal to me, you may ask.  Because it ruins the magic.  All of the Disney Parks icons are built to specific heights so that they don’t have to have that blinking reminder that you are so very close to the real world.  Cinderella’s castle is 189 feet tall, Tower of Terror is 199feet, even Expedition Everest, the tallest attraction at Disney, is 199.5 feet tall.  The original geosphere was 180 feet tall, a perfectly respectable height.  Now?  Now it’s 257 feet with that stinking wand and its stupid sparkles.  Take it off, Disney!  You make enough money to be able to throw something away every once and a while.

Moving on.

Spaceship Earth is one of my favorite rides at Epcot.  Why?  It’s the closest ride to a park entrance, so you don’t have to wait for the magic to begin.  It gives the history of communication with old-school animatronics.  It’s voiced by Jeremy Irons.  It has scads of details of inside jokes and historical accuracy.  It’s suitable for the entire family.  It’s air conditioned.  The list goes on and on but in short, it’s one of those uniquely Disney rides that I never tire of.  No matter how much the rest of Epcot changes, it’s still there and pretty darn close to how it was when Epcot opened in 1982.

Before I get into the other aspects of Epcot I’m looking forward to, let me give you a general overview on Epcot and its layout.

Epcot is divided into two areas:  Future World and the World Showcase.  Future world is at the main entrance to the park and hosts the geosphere and most of the rides.  The World Showcase is at the “back” of the park and has pavilions around the World Showcase Lagoon representing 11 different countries.  (Canada, United Kingdom, France, Morocco, Japan, The American Adventure, Italy, Germany, China, Norway, and Mexico).

Most people don’t know this, but Epcot has two ways to get into the park.  Besides the main entrance, there is a small entry between France and United Kingdom.  I’ve used this way to walk to the park when I’m staying at the Boardwalk hotels.  It also has a boat dock for the boats that run around the Boardwalk area and to and from Hollywood Studios.  If you plan on using this “secret” entrance keep in mind that World showcase doesn’t open until 11, so the “back” entrance won’t either.

Now let’s get to the heart of this post:  why I like Epcot.  I think the first reason is that, like Magic Kingdom, many of my happy childhood memories from my family vacations growing up involve Epcot.

We always seemed to have an extra day to go to one park twice on our vacations, and most of the time we would go to Epcot.  I think my parents liked it because it was more educational that the other parks.  I think my brother liked it because it was the most grown-up of the parks (and as the oldest child, and the only boy of the siblings, I think that’s valid).  I’m not sure why my sisters liked it, but maybe it was just enough that we were still going somewhere at Disney than going home.  Whatever the reasons, that’s where we went and that’s where we had fun.  (Which is not a very hard thing to do with my family – one of my favorite memories is when we all got delayed at a tiny airport for 6 and ½ hours.  Try making that a good experience with any other family.)

But I like Epcot for more than just the memories.  I love Test Track and Mission: SPACE.  Soarin’ Over California is one of the coolest family rides that are out there.  How can you not love Figment from Imagination!?  A few of the sidewalks glow at night, the drinking fountains talk to you, and the main fountain puts on a show to thrilling music.  And that’s just Future World.

The World Showcase is defiantly intended for an older audience; however, it has plenty of activities that will keep the kids entertained.  Every “country” has a kid’s spot where they can make crafts and learn about the pavilion’s culture.  Most countries have live entertainers (Off Kilter, Living Statues, MoRockin, Matsuriza, Voices of Liberty, Alpine Trio, Drums of Congo, Dragon Legend Acrobats, Blamann, and Huitzilin, for example) and Norway and Mexico even have rides.  If nothing else, you have 11 countries cuisine to choose from and even the quick service food is delicious if you don’t want to fork out a lot of cash for the ritzy sit-down places.  Did I mention most countries have character meet and greet spots too?  Oh, well, they do.  Plus, you have the DCOH (Disney Characters On Holiday) bus cruising around the park at various times too.  (Little known secret: a few of the hard-to-find Disney characters may make an appearance by the hard-to-find bathrooms at the Imagination! pavilion.  Don’t camp out there though – it’s more of a lucky chance if you happen to be around for it.)

Alright, this is all great, but let me get to my favorite part of Epcot.  Are you ready for it?

IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth

If I just explained it as a fireworks and laser show, that wouldn’t be telling you the half of it.  Like Wishes, it’s difficult to explain what makes the show so spectacular.  Yes, the fireworks are cool.  The Earth Globe is beautiful.  The lasers, the fire, the special effects that surround you are exciting.  But there is something in the air that makes it bring a tear to your eye just thinking about it.  Maybe it’s just a part of the Disney theme parks experience, where you’re so tired and emotionally overwhelmed that anything seems significant.  Maybe it’s the overall theme of loving your fellow man and that dreams can come true.  Whatever it may be, its breath taking and it gets me every time.  I can’t wait!

So that, my friends, is Epcot.  I’ll be back next week with the next installment of Countdown to Disney.

See ya’ll real soon!

Countdown to Disney – 6 weeks

Posted in Disney at 3:32 pm by pxyshan

After two years, my husband and I are finally heading back to Walt Disney World for a vacation.  He has a conference for work at the Marriott World Center, which just happens to be 1.5 miles away from WDW, so we’re going down early to get our Disney fix.  The last time we were down there, we got engaged.  A lot has happened since then, and I am really looking forward to heading back to my home away from home.

In preparation for our (short) visit I’m going to post each week on various aspects of Walt Disney World up to our trip, then a review after I get home.

Without further ado, I give you

Countdown to Disney: (6 weeks)

Magic Kingdom

Yes, I start with the most well known park in WDW.  Many (stupid) people refer to it as just Disney World.  It is what people think of when they picture the 30,000 acre resort area that spans two counties in Florida.  The Magic Kingdom is based on Disneyland, but is much larger that it’s Anaheim brother.  One of the best features of the park is the one most people don’t consider when they picture it.

I’m speaking of the Transportation and Ticket Center that takes guests from the parking lot to the gates of the Magic Kingdom.  Most people don’t realize that the extra travel time every guest takes to get to the park is very intentional.  When Walt Disney was designing Magic Kingdom, he wanted guests to have time to forget the real world and leave their troubles behind in anticipation of getting into the park and seeing the beautiful castle.  That’s why you have to take either the monorail or ferryboat to get to the gates.

A little known fact: if you are on some of the first ferryboat loads of the day into the park, you may have Chip and Dale or Pluto hitching a ride with you.  They are usually on the top deck.

Now, I’m not going to bore you with step by step details and facts of the park that a lot of people already know.  No, I’m going to bore you with what makes this park my favorite out of them all at WDW.

Reason 1: Unexpected Entertainment

Besides being the only way to get to the castle and all the other areas of the park, Main Street USA has some fun you may not notice if you only run through the street to get to the Space Mountain FastPass first.  Take a stroll, you may get to hop on the fire truck or horse drawn trolley that will take you to the other end of the street.  Or you could catch a show from some dancers on the trolley or sit on a bench and you may hear the Dapper Dans quartet.  Don’t forget to watch out for some of Main Street’s local residents, Scoop Sanderson (reporter), Tabatha Quidnunk (town gossip), Hildegard Olivia Harding (socialite), or Mayor Weaver.  On top of all that, you could get a haircut at the barber shop, shop to your hearts content, or meet a pretty good selection of characters in the town square area with smaller lines than many of the other areas of the parks.  And this is all before you even get to the Castle!

But Main Street USA isn’t the only place to find unexpected entertainment.  Tomorrowland has its own band and talking (maybe even moving) trashcan (affectionately known as PUSH).  Adventureland hosts pirate lessons for kids, I mean, swashbucklers of all ages.  Frontierland has the “Notorious Banjo Brothers and Bob” and a Hoedown.  Even Fantasyland has a sax quartet and story time with Belle.  And if you’re leaving the park at closing time, turn around after you walk under the railroad tracks – Mickey will be there saying goodbye to you and sending kisses!  All of this plus all the regular character meet and greet spots, how can you not feel the magic of Disney?

Ok, ok, so you’ve come for the rides?  Magic Kingdom’s got them too.

Reason 2: Rides

You got the mountains; Space, Splash, and Big Thunder.  All of them bring back the nostalgia of my childhood, but my favorite is most defiantly Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.  Not only is this a fun tummy tickler with a significant shaded wait area (including water fountains!); it has a flawless theme and is a very different thrill at night (keep an eye out for a spectacular view of the castle and the multi-hued springs next to the dino bones).  What I enjoy most about the ride is that it reminds me of sitting next to my silly Dad who would exaggerate the twists and turns by squishing me into the side or pulling me tight next to him.  Throw in his Goofy scream (Yaaahhaahahhhoooeeeyyy!) and you wouldn’t know it from us that the roller coaster was only classified as mild.  It puts a smile on my face just thinking about it.  Oh, and don’t forget: “Hang onto your hats and glasses, folks, cause this here’s the wildest ride in the wilderness!”

Of course there are more than just the mountains at Magic Kingdom.  You have Pirates of the Caribbean, Dumbo, Peter Pan’s flight, Tomorrowland Transit Authority, Jungle Cruise, and so many more that most everyone has heard of in some way or another.

Yes, the rides at WDW are lots of fun, but they are only just a fraction of why so many come back again and again.  Magic Kingdom is all about being a kid and experiencing magic.  Which brings me to:

Reason 3: Everything Else

There is just so much that can be done and seen while you’re in the Magic Kingdom.  You like parades?  They have at least one, if not two or three everyday.  (SpectroMagic is my favorite and should be checked out.)  While you’re waiting for them, cast members come out and entertain you with games.  You like shopping?  You can buy crystal and fine art, watches, clothes, stuffed animals, shoes, rain gear, almost anything.  Have a family picture taken in front of the castle.  Learn your genealogy and get a plaque with your family’s personal history on it.  Stop for a game of checkers or an ice cream cone.  Ride the train.    Ride the riverboat.  There is just so much to do!

So what is my favorite thing to do of them all?  Watch the nightly fireworks show, Wishes.  There is no way for me to describe this show to you.  I could try to explain that it’s beautiful and funny and sad and inspiring, but it’s something you have to experience on your own.  It means so very much to me for so many different reasons and it makes me cry every time I see it.  I think it’s what I’m most looking forward to when my husband and I go down in six weeks.

And in true Disney fashion, this is where I leave you.  As the fireworks signal the end of the night, so this brings this Countdown to Disney (six weeks) to a close.

See ya’ll real soon!

We’re a pretty messed-up pair, aren’t we?: New Moon

Posted in Twilight at 10:47 am by pxyshan

Chapter 5 – 18

Oh goodness.  Here we are, months after Edward has left and we have ALL-CAPS-BELLA looking for a way to give this entire book a point.  Or something like that.  This brings us to Jacob Black.

Jacob is the exact opposite of Edward in every literary way you can imagine.  He has dark skin, black hair, runs a fever, acts very young, and always smiles.  Oh, and he’s totally cool with Bella endangering her life.  I can’t think of a better way to keep Edward off your mind then finding a way to hallucinate his voice yelling at you as you ride to your death on a motorcycle.  Have I mentioned Bella seems younger in this book?

Now, as inept as Bella thinks she is at flirting, she does an awful lot of it with Jacob.  You don’t need to be sexy and alluring to flirt.  All it takes is smiling and giving the guy the knowledge that they’re really important to you.  Poor Jacob for hoping that he can actually have something more with Bella.  Poor Jacob for not seeing how heartless Bella really is.  Kind of literally at this point.  You really gotta learn Jacob, don’t date the crazies!  Why?  Because they’re crazy!

At this point everything is going well and Jake and Bella are making all sorts of promises at each other.  (I’ll love and wait for you forever, I don’t like you that way, I don’t care, good luck with that, ext.)  Then <gasp!> Jake disappears like a fart in the wind, breaking all the promises he’s ever made at Bella.  We, the reader, now get:

 FREAKED-OUT-ALL-CAPS-BELLA

Not as zombie like as the original, but much more twitchy.  Show her a bad vampire and watch her vibrate in fear off your table!

Lucky for us, it only takes 53 pages (and a little spat between our new lovebirds) until Jake turns up and tries to make Bella understand what’s going on.  “Look Bella, you have another supernatural protector who is madly in love with you!  Let’s make more promises we can break!”

Let me pause here for my tangent on promises.  Promises can be viewed in two ways.  They are either a binding contract that results in years of hardship and heartache when broken or… they’re no big deal.  The thing that bothers me most about them is any promise can be viewed in one of these two ways or both.  I promise to love and cherish you all the days of my life.  I promise I won’t laugh.  I promise never to hurt you.  Blah, blah, blah.  What bothers me about the Twilight series is the lack of consistency.  Either make all promises a big deal or don’t.  As an author I feel you have that power.  This is Sci-fi for crying out loud.  I understand that promises in the real world maintain two different significances, but for me they don’t.  Promises to me are a very big deal and my husband and I promise very little to each other because of that.  (well, except for marriage vows and such.  I’d say that’s a big one.)  The point being that you can’t guarantee what will happen in the future, so the more promises you make, the less likely you will be to fulfill all of them.  Perhaps that’s a negative way to look that it all, but I still find it annoying.  Ok, tangent done.

So Jake is back and Bella is being looked after again, and all is well.  Bella thinks she is really ready to start moving on and make Jake happy as his love.  However, this is a book about a vampire romance, so we know that can’t really last for long.  So:

Viola!  Alice shows up to make sure Charlie is ok after Bella’s supposed death.  Or to make sure Bella is really dead?  You know, I’m not really sure I believe that Alice would come back for either of those reasons after being threatened by Edward to never again make contact.  However, I guess this is Sci-fi and we do need to find a way for our main couple to get back together.

Hence Alice’s presence and Rosalie’s big mouth.  Edward is going to kill himself?  Who’s being melodramatic now?  I’ll dive into that next time.

“You brought a snack?”:Twilight Part 3

Posted in Twilight at 4:16 pm by stickfiguregirl

It’s August 1!  Eleven hours from now, I should be purchasing my copy of Breaking Dawn.  Time seems to be dragging at the moment.  It’s very quiet at work, but I can’t read the end of Eclipse until I leave this evening.  At least that should make the time pass faster once I get home.  I’m going to the midnight release party at the Barnes & Noble near my house, and I plan to take some pictures.  I’ll write about it this weekend (after I’m done reading)!

However, I still need to wrap up my observations of Twilight.  So let’s get started:

  • How does a baseball bat (even an aluminum bat) not break when a vampire hits a ball?  Surely the impact would damage the bat in some way, right?
  • When Laurent, Victoria, and James emerged from the woods, I was immediately creeped out.  One of the scarier facts about them is that none of them were wearing shoes.  Imagine a deadly predator that can move amazingly fast.  Now imagine that there’s no chance you can hear them at all.  I think that’s terrifying.
  • If Bella didn’t seem like a teenager before, she certainly does when she’s getting her things from Charlie’s in order to leave.  There’s the screaming, crying, door slamming, and utter confusion in this scene.  It’s no wonder Charlie is astounded.
  • I can’t believe that Charlie lets Bella leave.  Sure, Bella quoting her mother is playing dirty.  However I can’t imagine that Charlie would just let Bella run out of the house and drive away while she was so emotional.  If nothing else, he’s a sheriff and he would be concerned about Bella’s safety.
  • What would it feel like to have Jasper alter your emotions?  It would be great to feel calmer when you’re in a very stressful situation.  If you were aware of it, though, I think it could be distressing.  How strange would it be to have thoughts of panic but not have the emotional reaction?
  • How ironic is it that Bella goes to confront James at the dance studio?  Clumsy Bella walks into a building where gracefulness is taught in order to face an amazingly graceful and cunning opponent.
  • I am very interested to see the fight scene between James and Edward when the movie comes out.  In my mind, I see it as being nearly lyrical.  It will also be great to see because Bella only remembers bits and pieces of what happened in the book.
  • She fell down two flights of stairs and through a window?  Who thinks this is a plausible cover story?  I know that Bella is clumsy, but that is really over the top.  Alice must have done a damn good job of faking the accident scene.  I guess it was good that Carlisle was there as well.  The “fell down the stairs” story may not have gone down well with doctors who might have assumed Bella was abused had he not been there.

It’s been very interesting for me to re-read Twilight.  I’ve noticed many things that I didn’t before.  I think that’s the mark of a good book: if you read it several times, and you’re still getting something out of it, it must be at least interesting.  I’ve also learned some things during this experiment.  I’ll never break a book into such large parts again.  I also should have taken better notes.

But that’s not important now.  What is?  Getting home to read before I go get my copy of Breaking Dawn!

“Don’t be melodramatic, please.” :New Moon

Posted in Potter, Twilight at 1:11 pm by pxyshan

Chapters 1 – 4

For most people (the sane ones) New Moon is the least favorite book in the Twilight saga.  With good reason.  Besides the fact that part two of any saga/trilogy isn’t usually as good as the first, half of the point of the book (Bella and Edward) is missing for, wait, let me count, 378 pages.  Out of 563!  But I’m getting ahead of myself.

I was given Twilight as a shower gift three nights before my wedding from a very reliable source for good books.  Lucky for me, my thoughts after reading the back were, “Vampires, huh?  I’ll wait, thanks.”

I finally got around to reading Twilight on my way back from a weekend trip, two months later.  I finished it soon after we got back and immediately went out to buy New Moon and put my name on the waiting list at the library for Eclipse (I was #312).  After New Moon was finished I tried to hold out for Eclipse (I was #310).  I lasted about a week until I bought Eclipse at work with a once lost gift card.  Then I had five months to wait for Breaking Dawn.  (I received notification from the library in June that Eclipse was available for me to check out.  I would have never lasted that long.)

Between then and now, I’ve read Twilight and Eclipse several times and I’ll admit I’ve re-read parts of New Moon, but not the whole book.  Why would I?  Edward left, then he came back.  Cool, next book please.  However, as I drew the short end of the stick for dust, here I am, with my thoughts on my second read of New Moon, in anticipation of Breaking Dawn.

Before I dive into the book, I want to make note of something I read on Stephenie Meyer’s website the other day.  She had asked that those reading New Moon do so twice.  She found that the first time through, the reader will skip ahead to find Edward again, missing the main section of the novel.  Having a second reading will allow you to slow down and enjoy “the wounderousness” of Jacob Black.  So I’m taking things slow.

With all that said, now let us dive into the second reading of New Moon.

My first thought as I’m starting the book is how much younger Bella seems now as compared to Twilight.  She is very hung up on not celebrating her birthday as it makes her <gasp> a whole year older than Edward!!  Wait.  Ok so Edward’s body and some parts of his mind are only technically 17.  But wasn’t he 17- ah – 90 years ago?  Really Bella, doesn’t that count for something?  You have an example of loving younger men with your mom.  Granted, that may be where the hang up is, however we’re told that Phil is much younger than Renee, and it suites them.  Plus, speaking from experience here, being with a younger guy is fun, and I even thought so when I was 17.

Moving forward, Edward demonstrates his <cough> wisdom and maturity <cough, cough, gag> by deciding to leave Bella “for her own good” instead of talking things over.  I could write a novel about the level of communication that is needed to make a relationship work, but I won’t.  I could write another novel about how unobservant and thick guys tend to be, especially when it comes to how much their significant others love them, but, again, I won’t.  What’s done is done.  Edward is gone and Bella becomes a zombie.

Which I’m not surprised by.  As discussed in book three, she has no balance with Edward and the rest of her life.  He is her life, therefore, her life is gone with him.  Sadly, I’m sure that I would go through something similar (though on a shorter and lesser scale) if my husband were to die.  Note, die; not leave.  In reality, any self-respecting woman would be pissed off if the love of her life just up and left her.  However, this is not reality, and as stated above, Bella is more immature this time around and most defiantly not self-respecting.  So we readers are introduced to:

Da Da Da Dun!

ALL-CAPS-BELLA!

Yes ladies and gentlemen, you may remember our beloved ALL-CAPS-HARRY from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.  He amazed us with his anger and angst at anything that moved (and a few things that didn’t) as he went though arguably the hardest part of his life and longest book of the series.  Now ALL-CAPS-BELLA has come to dazzle us (yes, that’s right) with her distractions and recklessness.  (Both ALL-CAPS characters come with hearing voices at no additional cost to the reader.)

So, ALL-CAPS-BELLA is trying to find a way to ignore the gaping hole in her chest.  Enter: Jacob Black aka Exact Opposite of Edward.

And that my friends, is where I shall leave you today.  Next time we’ll take a look at Bella’s relationship with Jacob and how she is able to click with a “normal human” for once.  Oh Bella, when will you learn?

Chapters 1-5 of Eclipse

Posted in Twilight at 9:57 pm by pxefig

I first read Twilight about six months ago at the insisting of my sister. We have similar tastes in everything and I am always desperate for something to read, so despite the description of “teenage vampire love saga” I bit. And it was good! I won’t ever rank it up with favorite books or best book series ever, but the Twilight series is a fun quick escape, and that is pretty much what I am looking for when I pick up a book. Stephenie Meyer has a great imagination, and I look forward to finding out what other books she has percolating in her brain.

Okay, for my first post I am going to talk about the first five chapters of Eclipse. This is my favorite book in the series, and I think it’s because Edward and Bella are together the whole time. No getting to know each other, no separation for 200 chapters, they are together. In my opinion, the more Edward, the better.

The first chapter starts off with Charlie trying to make dinner. Now, Charlie is one of my least favorite characters in the series. I find it impossible that a man who lived by himself for 14 years doesn’t know how to cook spaghetti. 10 year olds can make spaghetti. I mean, I’ll let the whole vampire and werewolf thing go, but I draw the line of unfeasibility at grown men not knowing how to make simple pasta dishes!

Anyway, Bella gets ungrounded after Charlie mutters the line, “You’re remarkable non-whiney for a teenager.” I laughed out loud at that part. Really, Charlie? Really? Just goes to show how little he knows his daughter.

In the chapter Bella talks about how her friends at school are divided between who sits with the Cullens and who doesn’t which makes me ask the question: Why do the Cullens even go to school? Prior to Bella, they never interacted with anyone, never made friends, never even ate the food and already know all of the lessons, why go to school at all?

Also in the first 100 pages of the book is my least favorite thing Edward does. I hate it when he disables Bella’s car when she wants to go see Jacob. It drives me insane that vampire or no, werewolf or no, that he feels he has the right to tell her who she can see. It is controlling and obnoxious and it really bugs me that Bella pretty much trips over her own clumsy feet in her haste to forgive him because she is needy and codependent. For the one sentence she shuts the window to block Edward out I had half a second to think “Good for you!” before reading the next sentence when she opens the window again. Oh, Bella. It’s okay to be angry at some one when they are overstepping their boundaries and being a chauvinistic pig.

Another issue I have with the book is exactly why all these guys are in love with Bella. I want to like her. I really do. At least in the first book she is written as strong and intelligent, capable of making her own decisions and defending herself, but by book three she is a whiney, sniveling, codependent unable to pick up her room without getting Edward’s approval first. And Edward never satisfactorily answers why he loves her. The most we get is a thin “You don’t see yourself the way I do.” What kind of answer is that? Bella seems nice enough, but I honestly do not get what is so special about her that Edward hasn’t found it in any other woman in the last 100 years? It because he can’t read her mind and isn’t treated to the inane internal dialogue we readers get? Is it the way she smells to him? If either one of those are factors, how will it change the way he feels about her when she becomes a vampire? And a one point of the book Bells comments about how Alice and Jasper’s relationship isn’t as flamboyant as Emmett’s and Rosalie’s and my response was Wah? If it weren’t for the fact that that it is stated in black and white that any of them have relationships, I wouldn’t know it was happening. The books so focus on Edward and Bella’s affair that there really isn’t any character development for the other vampires. I have never really seen anything between the other characters to suggest affection, much less an immortal passion.

Those are my thoughts for now. I know that it seems like I am bagging on the book. I’m really not, I really do like them. But seeing as it’s mentioned every other page that Edward is attractive I feel that is information I don’t have to discuss …
